Building the Pond

For his 40th Birthday in June 2002, Dale's wish was for a pond in the back yard. From day one of its construction it's been a totally enjoyable project. The stones that make up the pond's edge we found in the fields around here; farmers were too happy to let us collect as many stones as we could haul away.

The next step was adding water plants.

The first year we put umbrella plants, irises and hyacinth (nature's water filter) into the pond. We added a few 8 cent goldfish and planted some perennial grasses around the perimeter and between the rocks plus a variety of leafy ground cover that by the end of summer had established itself really well.
